Lushootseed or Whulshootseed Salish is a Salishan language of the Northwest Coast, spoken by more than a dozen small Puget Sound Salish tribes (including the Skagit, Swinomish, Snohomish/Tulalip, Sauk-Suiattle, Duwamish, Muckleshoot, Nisqually, Puyallup, Sahewamish, Skykomish, Snoqualmie, Suquamish, Stillaguamish, and Squaxin tribes.)

Lushootseed, like its neighbour Twana, is in the Southern Coast Salish subgroup of the Salishan family of languages. The language was spoken by many Puget Sound region peoples, including the Duwamish, Steilacoom, Suquamish, Squaxin Island Tribe, Muckleshoot, Snoqualmie, Nisqually, and Puyallup in the south and the Snohomish, Stillaguamish, Skagit, and Swinomish in the north.

This is not absolute. Snoqualmie and Muckleshoot (xʷəlšucid) prefer a long-E pronunciation for ʔi ‘yes’, where the rest of Southern Lushootseed speakers prefer a long-A. For Northern Lushootseed, long-U for stubš is said by some, while others prefer a long-O. Northern Lushootseed uses the term tiʔił ‘that’.
