NAHUATL SCRIPT Marc Thouvenot Nahuatl script1 is that which was used by Nahuatl-speakers at the time of the Spanish conquest of Mesoamerica, in which a key èvent was the fall of Mexico-Tenochtitlan in 1521. The geographic center of use of this writing system was the Mexican Valley, and its best known users were the Aztecs.

Nahuatl writing has been described as a partial system (Barthel 1968: 283) and a restricted system (Prem 1992: 54-55), since its use was limited – at least in all surviving documents known to us – to the oft ambiguous rendition of names of persons 3 and places, and to the recording of dates 2 This topic will be returned to in a separate paper.

On the Nahuatl edition of Wikipedia, the language is written in a Latin script, including four letters with macrons or long vowels: ā, ē, ī, ō. Many other foreign letters such as b or k are used only in foreign names, such as in Francitlān ( France ). The orthography used there is outlined below:

Aug 01, 2018 · Their writing system consisted of a mixture of ideographic and phonetic writing. The same symbols are used for each system, and which one was being used depended on context. Thus, the writing system was partly phonetic, but not entirely which has made it more challenging to translate parts of the Nahuatl codices.

Aztec Writing: Vigesimal Number System. Aztec Writing: 365-day Solar Calendar Xiuhpohualli. Aztec writing also had its 365-day calendar called Xiuhpohualli. It consisted of 18 months with 20 days each. These months were called veintenas or metztli. There was also a separate five-day period at the end of each year known as nemontemi.
