People do it because they can get what they want and if you do it yourself, you can do it cheaper than if you paid somebody. I have not bought a PC since my first one back in the 90's. Every single other one has been a custom job built by myself. It means I put in the memory I want, the CPU I want, the motherboard I want, the video card I want etc.
