Shamanism, religious phenomenon centered on the shaman, a person believed to achieve various powers through trance or ecstatic religious experience. Shamans are typically thought to have the ability to heal the sick, to communicate with the otherworld, and often to escort the souls of the dead to that otherworld.

At the core of shamanic belief is the Shaman, who possesses a unique ability to access the unseen, spiritual world. A Shaman accesses this world by entering a trance to communicate with benevolent and malevolent spirits in an attempt to manipulate spiritual energies affecting people in the physical world.

There do seem to be universal beliefs that are part of most of the shamanism-like practices of the world ('saman' is a Tungus word; we use 'shamanism' to try to describe and explain similar practices elsewhere in the world): Everything, all matter is alive. Everything is aware. Everything grows and transforms.
