Race, power and privilege ‘Cultural competence’ refers to the knowledge, skills and awareness of cultural differences and similarities within, among and between groups. It is important to translate this ‘competence’ into professional practice, so that all social groups are treated with respect and in recognition of their diversity.

Power is the ability to influence and make decisions that impact others. Privilege is advantages and benefits that individuals receive because of social groups they are perceived to be a part of. Privilege is often a result of systematic targeting and/or marginalization of another social group.

Give each student a copy of Student Handout 2: Power Flower. Number students off from 1- 4, and ask them to separate into four groups according to their number. Assign each group a different colour petal section (as seen on slide 11) to work on together (for example, the pink petals can be assigned to group one).
