Konjac (or konjak, English: / ˈkɒnjæk, ˈkɒndʒæk / KON-yak, KON-jak) is a common name of the East and Southeast Asian plant Amorphophallus konjac (syn. A. rivieri), which has an edible corm (bulbo-tuber).
Amorphophallus konjac, or Voodoo Lily, is a herbaceous, cormous, perennial plant found in forest margins and thickets in China. It has glossy brown edible corms (bobo-tuber) that produce rhizomatous offsets each year. The plant is widely cultivated in Japan and China as food source and as an ornamental.
The botanical name of the plant is Amorphophallus Konjac. With a diameter of around 8 inches (20cm), the Konjac plant grows as a root also known as Konjac tubes. While considered a type of perennial plant, the Konjac plant can live for up to 5 years.
Amorphophallus konjac is a large, perennial exotic Asian plant. It grows a single, elongated center called a corm and a single large leaf that wraps around it. The corm is the part of the plant that is used, as well as its tuber, which is commonly called the konnyaku potato.
Amorphophallus konjac produces a single large, smelly flower from each bulb. Photos courtesy of David Waugh, Morningwood Farm, Mt. Horeb, WI. As a tender plant, the leaf is very frost sensitive (although buried tubers are supposedly hardy to zone 6), and must be grown indoors as a house plant or as a seasonal outdoor plant.
After flowering, the plant may rest for months before the leaf emerges. The mother tuber will form offsets, eventually making a giant clump...very exotic and unusual! Amorphophallus konjac has long been prized medicinally for its weight loss properties and is now used in many weight loss products.
