Leon Cooper, a Navy landing boat commander who survived the costly Battle of Tarawa in World War II and later became a leading advocate for the preservation of the site on that Pacific atoll and the return of Marines’ remains buried there, died on Nov. 16 in Malibu, Calif. He was 98. His son William said the cause was complications of a fall.
