The first submarine was invented in 1578 by William Bourne. It was a very basic design that used a wooden barrel and could be submerged for a short period. The first submarine constructed by Cornelius Van Drebbel in 1620 was made out of wood, leather, and lead.
British mathematician William Bourne made some of the earliest known plans for a submarine around 1578, but the world’s first working prototype was built in the 17th century by Cornelius Drebbel, a Dutch polymath and inventor in the employ of the British King James I. Drebbel’s sub was probably a modified rowboat coated in greased leather and manned by a team of oarsmen.

After William Bourne, Cornelius Van Drebbel, a Dutchman in the service of James I of England, designed and built the first successful submarine in 1620. Van Drebbel was inspired by Archimedes’ principle that an object submerged in water experiences an upward force equal to its weight multiplied by the density of water.

How did the invention of the submarine change the world?
These two innovations, together with inertial navigation systems, gave submarines the ability to remain submerged for weeks or months, and enabled previously impossible voyages such as the crossing of the North Pole beneath the Arctic ice cap by the USS Nautilus in 1958.

What is the origin of the word'submarine'?
The noun submarine evolved as a shortened form of submarine boat; by naval tradition, submarines are usually referred to as "boats" rather than as "ships", regardless of their size (boat is usually reserved for seagoing vessels of relatively small size).

All surface ships, as well as surfaced submarines, are in a positively buoyant condition, weighing less than the volume of water they would displace if fully submerged. To submerge hydrostatically, a ship must have negative buoyancy, either by increasing its own weight or decreasing its displacement of water. To control their displacement and weight, submarines have ballast tanks, which ca…
