History of Olympia . The sanctuary at Olympia (Ολυμπία) is positioned in a serene and fertile valley between the Alpheios and the Kladeos rivers in western Peloponnese, in Elis. It was the host of the Olympic games for a thousand years in antiquity. Early habitation of the area dates back to the 2nd millennium BCE or earlier (Adronicos, 5).

Olympia History, The fertile region of olympia was first settled during the 3rd millenium BC.It was then that the earliest structures were built at the southern foot of the hill of cronus.They were built of uncut stone and had one apsidal wall.

The ancient Olympic Games began in the year 776 BC, when Koroibos, a cook from the nearby city of Elis, won the stadion race, a foot race 600 feet long. The stadion track at Olympia is shown here. According to some literary traditions, this was the only athletic event of the games for the first 13 Olympic festivals or until 724 BC.
