History of St. Pete Like most of the United States, the Tampa Bay area was home to generations of Indigenous tribes before the first White settlers arrived. While Spanish explorers came and went in the 1500s, it wasn’t until much later that the St. Pete we know began to form.

The history of St Petersburg Florida is a short one, at least as far as the city itself is concerned. Before St Petersburg's incorporation as a city on February 29, 1892, much of the peninsula on which the city lies was relatively undeveloped. In 1875, a General from Detroit came to the peninsula and purchased 2,500 acres of land on the shores of beautiful Tampa Bay.

Williams, formerly of Detroit, who purchased the land in 1876, and by Peter Demens, who was instrumental in bringing the terminus of a railroad there in 1888. St. Petersburg was incorporated on February 29, 1892, when it had a population of only some 300 people.

According to local legend, the city was named St. Petersburg after Demens won a coin flip for naming rights. Since it was his home in Russia, he named the area for the place he grew up. PETERSBURG PIER (1988), 800 Second Avenue, has been the landmark of downtown since l899 when Peter Demens hooked up his Orange Belt Railroad to a half mile wharf. D. F. Brantley started the first pier pavilion in 1895, but it is the 1926 Million Dollar Pier torn down for today's pyramid that postcard collectors and real old-timers remember.

St. Pete began its brick paving of streets in 1903. Since brick streets add charm and character to the neighborhoods, City Council passed its first resolution in 1992 protecting against their removal, including granite curbs.
