- After World War-II, Taiwan became part of the Republic of China (ROC) in 1948, ruled by the nationalist Kuomintang Party. The leader of the nationalist government, Chang Kai-shek, fled to Taiwan with more than a million people in the wake of the victory of the communist revolution in 1949 to form the ROC government in Taiwan.
