From the very beginning, Germany is a prominent member of the EU.
With around 83 million inhabitants, Germany is the most populous country in the EU. Germany has an area of 357,022 square kilometres making it the fourth largest country in the EU, following France, Spain and Sweden. Germany has a gross domestic product of 3,344 billion euros making it the largest economy in the EU.
As a proactive and constructive part of the EU, Germany is big enough for the world, and at the same time not too big for its neighbors. As Steinmeier and German Minister of Economic Affairs Sigmar Gabriel, recently wrote, “Only together, and only at the European level, will we be able at all to find rational solutions.”

Why is Germany considered equivalent to the entire EU?
Germany is not considered equivalent to the entire EU because Germany is one country while the European Union is, for painfully obvious reasons, not one country (yet). Historically, there are parallels between the way Germany unified in the 1850s-60s and how the EU may be unified in the future.

Why does Germany dominate the EU?
Not only is Germany the largest economy in the EU, it's also the economic engine. A lot of European countries have strong links with Germany. So if the German economy grows, the other economies will grow as well. Its central location in Europe is another reason why Germany is so powerful. It has strong connections to West, East and Northern Europe.

Does Germany have too much power in the EU?
When it comes to EU decision-making, the prevailing view in five of nine European nations is that Germany has too much influence. This view is most common in Greece, Spain and Italy. More than half in Poland and a plurality in Hungary agree that Germany plays an outsize role in EU decisions.

    • Why is Germany considered part of Europe? - Quora

Yes, Germany IS BECOMING part of Europe. NO, until very recently it could be argued that the EU WAS A CONTINUATION of Germany. Of course what I mean is the EUROZONE which is really the heart of the European Union. It was and is still a challenge to create and maintain a common currency for countries that have a very different economic profiles.
