03/03/2009 · The Linear B Tablets interpreted. From archaeological context, Linear B was known to be the writing of the Mycenaeans. But before 1952 no-one knew who the Mycenaeans were. Archaeology had revealed a rich Late Bronze Age culture of c.1600-1100 BC, but the language and ethnicity of its creators remained uncertain.

These clay tablets, from the archives in the Mycenaean palaces at Pylos and Knossos, were written in a syllabic script (each sign represents a syllable rather than a single sound). The script is called “Linear B” to distinguish it from “Linear A,” another script (thus far undeciphered) used in other documents found at Knossos and elsewhere.

In 1900, Arthur Evans recognised and named these first Aegean scripts in the palace at Knossos in Crete, which was occupied by the Mycenaeans after 1450 BC.

Linear B tablets, sometimes derided as mere laundry lists, are in fact a rich source for economic and social history. Although the latter has often been overshadowed by the former, in fact the most commonly attested words in Mycenaean Greek are personal names.

Linear B tablets do give some evidence concerning Mycenaean religion, however it is limited in the fact that it only tells us the names of deities, places of worship, offerings made. These tablets reveal to archaeologists the Mycenaean religion was in fact different to that of the Minoans and can be linked to the deities of 8th century Greece, such as Zeus, Hera, Poseidon, Athena, …
