Ivan's biggest mistake was killing his own son Ivan in a fit of insanity. In 1581 Ivan beat his pregnant daughter-in-law for wearing immodest clothing. This caused a miscarriage. His son, also named Ivan, was understandably furious. He engaged in a heated argument with his father.
