I have had a lot of trouble finding locked crates... Here is what I do to find them... (1) Craft a rifle. Even if you have no ammo for it, the "Zoom" view is very useful. (2) Get yourself to the top of a rock outcrop. (3) Use the rifle to look down around you for those crates. (4) If you see nothing, wander over to another outcrop.
