What in the world is going on with all the cursing? Well humans developed language to express things and communicate. Cursing is a huge part of that. That’s why cursing has existed for as long as language has. It’s an important part of our language and communication. Like anything, it can be overdone, but generally speaking, it’s a useful too.

Profanity has also been used as a form of social protest, it’s a way for people to say “I don’t want to fit into the box you’re trying to fit me in.” Cursing can certainly be used in a negative and harmful connotation, but since it is just a sound, it completely depends on the meaning of the speaker. That’s why substitution is silly.

Curse words are a muddy area in societal history because oftentimes we can’t trace back whysaying them became taboo. For some of these words, it’s the usage in insults that might have given them their original meaning, combined with the fact that they’re generally slang in origin.
