Russian Army and the First World War. On the outbreak of the First World War it has been claimed that Russia had the largest army in the world. It is believed that there were 5,971,000 men in the Russian Army in August 1914. This was made up of 115 infantry and 38 cavalry divisions.

World War I and revolution On mobilization, the Russian Army totalled 115 infantry and 38 cavalry divisions with nearly 7,900 guns (7,100 field guns, 540 field howitzers and 257 heavy guns). There were only 2 army ambulances and 679 cars.

During World War One, Russia mobilised 15.800,000 soldiers. This represented close to 10% of their total population at the time. Close to 2 million Russian soldiers died in WW1. 500,000 civilian casualties were also recorded, bringing the total number of deaths to close to three million. Russia entered the war in 1914

By the autumn of 1915, an estimated 800,000 Russian soldiers had died, yet the Russian army had failed to gain any significant territory. Public morale and support for the war were dwindling. Russians became more receptive to anti-war rhetoric and propaganda, much of it disseminated by the growing Bolshevik movement.

A Russian historian in a 2004 handbook of human losses in the 20th century estimated 330,000 civilian dead (120,000 due to military activity, 10,000 as prisoners and 200,000 caused by famine and disease). ^ p Russian Empire.
