Zealandia is a long, narrow microcontinent that is mostly submerge d in the South Pacific Ocean. A microcontinent is a landmass that has broken off from a main continent. Zealandia broke off from Antarctica about 100 million years ago, and then from Australia about 80 million years ago.
If classified as a microcontinent, Zealandia would be the world's largest microcontinent. Its area is six times the area of Madagascar, the next-largest microcontinent in the world, [citation needed] and more than half the area of the Australian continent.

    Is Zealandia considered a continent?
Zealandia was a continent that existed up until 20 million years ago and since then, 95 percent of it has sunk underneath the South Pacific Ocean. The world today would be vastly different if Zealandia was never sunk. I will focus mostly on the human aspects of a timeline where Zealandia still exists and is merely a giant Aotearoa.

Why is New Zealand not a continent?
Why New Zealand is not a continent? The region has elevated bathymetry relative to surrounding oceanic crust, diverse and silica-rich rocks, and relatively thick and low-velocity crustal structure. Its isolation from Australia and large area support its definition as a continent —Zealandia.

New Zealand has its own continent. This is New Zealand, also known as Zeeland or Tasmantis, a gigantic mass of continental crust with more or less a surface that would be half that of Australia and that has been hidden and submerged under the sea for 23 million years.
