Erving Goffman studied the interactions that take place in society at the micro-level. He took this perspective from theatre, he uses theatre as a metaphor to represent how people behave in society and represent themselves.

The crux of his dramaturgical social theory is that the analysis of how teams cooperate to foster particular impressions of reality reveals a complex system of interactions that, in many ways, is like the presentation of a play.

In basic terms, Dramaturgical Theory is the idea that a person’s life can be understood by looking at a stage and seeing performers acting out a scene.
