    The single most important event that affected Bell Labs was the breakup of the Bell System in January 1984. The immediate change involved a reduction of the number of employees from 26,000 down to 19,000. Former Bell Lab employees were transferred to Bell Communications Research (Bellcore) and AT&T Information Systems.
