Scottish Gaelic (Scottish Gaelic: Gàidhlig [ˈkaːlɪkʲ] ), also known as Scots Gaelic and Gaelic, is a Goidelic language (in the Celtic branch of the Indo-European language family) native to the Gaels of Scotland. As a Goidelic language, Scottish Gaelic, as well as both Irish and Manx, developed out of Old Irish.

Scottish Gaelic was confronted by northern dialects of English (Scots) from the very beginning; these rapidly penetrated into the east of the country, especially in the area centred on Edinburgh, the capital. The so-called Highland Line, marking the boundary between the two languages, has been steadily receding to the west since medieval times.

An older free online course is available from Taic (also see the free course Beag air Bheag listed in the following section). Duolingo is not available in Scottish Gaelic and I am not aware of any current plans to make it available.
