- コンピュータ （ 英: computer ）は、現在ではとくに断らないかぎり 電子計算機 （でんしけいさんき、 英: electronic computer エレクトロニック・コンピュータ 。 漢字の 略語 は「電算機」）を指し 、 電子回路 による、 デジタル 方式でなおかつ プログラム内蔵方式 のコンピュータを指す。 演算（広義の演算）を高速・大量に行うことが可能なので用途は多様で、 数値計算 、 情報処理 、 データ処理 、 制御 、 シミュレーション 、 文書作成 、 動画編集 、 ゲーム などさまざまな用途に用いられている。 なおかつてはコンピュータと言うと アナログコンピューター も含めて指していた （1970年代や1980年代ころまで）。
