Yusuf was the son of Abd al-Mu'min, the first caliph of the Almohad dynasty. His mother was Safiyya bint Abi Imran, a masmuda woman, the daughter of Abu Imran Musa ibn Sulayman Al-kafif, a companion of Ibn tumart from Tinmel.
