    What is a diphthong?
Technically, a diphthong is a vowel with two different targets: that is, the tongue (and/or other parts of the speech apparatus) moves during the pronunciation of the vowel. In most varieties of English, the phrase "no highway cowboy" ( / noʊ ˈhaɪweɪ ˈkaʊbɔɪ /) has five distinct diphthongs, one in every syllable .

How many diphthongs are there in English?
By the mid-16th century, the Great Vowel Shift had created two new diphthongs out of the former long close monophthongs /iː/ and /uː/ of Middle English. The diphthongs were /əɪ/ as in tide, and /əʊ/ as in house. Thus, the English of south-eastern England could then have had nine diphthongs.

Did diphthongs change the sound of Old English?
The sound changes discussed here involved at least one phoneme which historically was a diphthong. Old English diphthongs could be short or long. Both kinds arose from sound changes occurring in Old English itself, although the long forms sometimes also developed from Proto-Germanic diphthongs.

    Is'Ju'a diphthong?
Using our definition of diphthong -- a unitary vowel that changes quality during its pronunciation, or "glides", with a smooth movement of the tongue from one articulation to another -- is seems as though 'ju' would qualify as one. It is a rising diphthong in my mind, anyway.

Diphthongs were originally conceived as phonetic descriptions anyway. Then phonemics got in the way, and now it's the obsolete little ugly duckling in the room.133.7.7.240(talk) 07:56, 14 June 2010 (UTC) >>Korean, Cantonese, Mandarin, and Japanese all have true diphthongs.
