Maharashtra is an Indian state that was formed on 1 May, 1960 with 26 initial districts. Since then, 9 additional districts have been created, and the state currently has 36 districts. North Maharashtra is the umbrella geographical region representing all 5 districts. ^ Amravati Division used to be a separate region of Central Provinces and Berar as Berar Division known as "Varhad" in Marathi before becoming part of Vidarbha Division of Maharashtra.
