Phillips was born in Charlton, Massachusetts. At age 18 he moved to Worcester, Massachusetts, where he served as a bookstore clerk in the shop of Clarendon Harris.

Feb 27, 2019 · Mr. Phillips was the son of Benjamin Phillips (born 1775), and Phoebe Walker. He was the grandson of Randolph County Pioneer and Revolutionary war veteran Thomas Phillips, Sr, born c. 1739, died 1810 (reference FindaGrave Memorial # 6426414). He married Margaret Scott (1811-1891); daughter of Thomas and Nancy Skidmore Scott in 1844.
