Vyviera v centrálnej časti Stredoruskej vysočiny a na hornom toku tečie údolím prevažne severným smerom. Na strednom toku sa stáča na východ a rozširuje sa údolie (z 0,5 až na 40 km) i koryto, ktoré tu dosahuje 250 - 400 metrov.
