Praejecta was a daughter of Vigilantia and Dulcidio (or Dulcissimus), respectively the sister and brother-in-law of Emperor Justinian. She was also a sister of the later Byzantine emperor Justin II (r. 565–578) and the patricius Marcellus. She was initially married to the patricius Areobindus, a senator of noble birth.

This deed won him great honour and fame: Praejecta, the widow of Areobindus and niece of Justinian, whom Guntharic was planning to marry, gave him a rich reward, while the emperor confirmed him as magister militum of Africa. Despite being already married to a relative of his, Artabanes eventually became engaged with Praejecta.

The praetorian prefecture of Africa ( Latin: praefectura praetorio Africae) was a major administrative division of the Eastern Roman Empire located in the Maghreb. With its seat centered at Carthage, it was established after the reconquest of northwestern Africa from the Vandals in 533–534 by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I.

Artabanes had felt slighted when the Empress Theodora had blocked his marriage with Emperor Justinian's niece Praejecta in 546 on the grounds of an existing marriage. Together with a few of his kinsmen, he plotted to murder Emperor Justinian and Belisarius and install his cousin Germanus as Byzantine emperor.
