Fjorden har innløp mellom Einebærneset ved Skjomnes i øst og Krøkebærneset ved Vidrek i vest og strekker seg rundt 18 kilometer i retning sør-sørøst innover mot Elvegård i fjordbunnen, hvor armen Sør-Skjomen fortsetter mot sør. Medregnet Sør-Skjomen er lengden omtrent 25 kilometer.
