En réponse au besoin d'une nouvelle route vers l'Asie, dans les années 1480, Christopher et son frère Barthélemy avaient élaboré un plan pour se rendre aux Indes (alors interprété à peu près comme toute l'Asie du Sud et de l'Est) en naviguant directement vers l'ouest à travers ce que l'on croyait être le singulier "Océan Mer", l'Océan Atlantique.

Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer and navigator who completed four voyages across the Atlantic Ocean, opening the way for the widespread European exploration and colonization of the Americas. His expeditions, sponsored by the Catholic Monarchs of Spain, were the first European contact with the Caribbean, Central America, and South America.

On March 14, 1502, Columbus started his fourth voyage with 147 men and with strict orders from the king and queen which instructed him not to stop at Hispaniola, but only to search for a westward passage to the Ocean Indyjski kontynent.
