Bävrar är den enda idag förekommande grupp med djur inom familjen Castoridae, som bara omfattar släktet Castor. På grund av vissa liknande benstrukturer i nedre käken och skallen antogs tidigare att bävrar är närbesläktade med ekorrar (Sciuridae) och de listades en längre tid tillsammans i underordningen Sciuromorpha.
