09/10/2020 · While there are a lot of English resources online for how to play Hanafuda (Japanese Flower Cards), actually learning the game can be confusing. There are some great guides, but all of them seem to be missing something or other.

Personally I think it's a good idea to represent Hanafuda in as generic a way as possible, so not using a specific colour scheme like the Nintendo one. Much like Playing cards are best represented generically rather than, say, using a Bicycle deck. There is much more to Hanafuda than that seen through a Nintendo lens.

The added bonus is the context and correlation you derive. Learning about the bush warbler from a line of text in the dictionary is fine, but learning it within the context of Hanafuda makes it less forgettable and also links it to both the game and the other birds and animals. Contextual learning helps increase overall memory recall.

Although Koi-Koi is the most popular Hanafuda game, I will be teaching Sakura first, also known as Hawaiian-style Koi Koi. We’ve found that Sakura was easier to learn as a beginner, and therefore the best way to get familiar with the cards. What Is Hanafuda?
