History of Portugal Portugal emerged as a country in 1143, after a 15 year rebellion by Dom Afonso Henriques (Afonso I). Afonso Henriques defeated his mother Countess Teresa of Portugal, regent of the County (Condado) of Portugal and loyal to the Kingdom of Leon, at the battle of Sao Mamede (Batalha de Sao Mamede) near the town of Guimaraes, in June of 1128.

The natural harbour of the Tagus River (Tejo) was an obvious attraction. From 210 BC onwards the Romans gradually extended their control over what is now present-day Portugal from their main power base in Spain.

In the 1st millennium bce, Celtic peoples settled the Iberian Peninsula. They were conquered c. 140 bce by the Romans, who ruled until the 5th century ce, when the area was invaded by Germanic tribes.

Portugal was formally recognized as an independent kingdom in 1143 by the Kingdom of León, into which Galicia was incorporated at the time, with Afonso Henriques as its first king.
