What is the study of dialects called? Dialectology (from Greek διάλεκτος, dialektos, "talk, dialect"; and -λογία, -logia) is the scientific study of linguistic dialect, a sub-field of sociolinguistics. It studies variations in language based primarily on geographic distribution and their associated features.
Dialectology is a study of language that focuses on understanding dialects. It is part of a larger group of studies called sociolinguistics, which evaluates the many elements that shape communication in whole cultures or in smaller groups.
Dialectology is the study of regional dialects, or dialects de ned by geographical regions. This was done originally by traveling around a country and asking the people living in various locales what words or phrases they use for particular objects and concepts.
There is a subfield called dialectology that directly studies dialects though. But for that you’re studying the dialects themselves, not how to reproduce them. Even if they did focus on reproducing a dialect, you wouldn’t be specializing in that during undergrad.

    When did dialectology begin?
Dialect study as a discipline—dialectology—dates from the first half of the 19th century, when local dialect dictionaries and dialect grammars first appeared in western Europe. Soon thereafter, dialect maps were developed; most often they depicted the division of a language’s territory into regional dialects.

    What is a dialect?
A simple, straightforward definition is that a dialect is any variety of English that is marked off from others by distinctive linguistic features. Such a variety could be associated with a particular place or region or, rather more surprisingly, it might also be associated with a certain social group—male or female, young or old, and so on.

Should we call it ‘dialect’ or ‘phonology’?
If vocabulary and grammar are being considered alongside pronunciation, then ‘dialect’ is a reasonable term to use. But often, when claiming to discuss a dialect, someone will concentrate just on pronunciations. If what is being spoken about are sounds alone—that is, accent—then the area of language study is rather pronunciation, or phonology.
