26/06/2019 · Madeira is a Portuguese island group located just off the west coast of Africa (about 300 miles from Morocco) that has become a popular American tourist destination in the winter season. However, while winter may be a popular season for travelers, spring is a great time to visit to see the lush vegetation of the islands in full bloom.

The Madeira Archipelago is located in the Atlantic Ocean in the African plate, 978 km south of Portugal, approximately 33 degrees north latitude, and about 700 km west of the African coast. Almost the same latitude as Casablanca and is 450 km north of the Canary Islands, and has a total area of 796 km 2 .

Madeira is part of Portugal, so is part of the European Union, as an Outermost Region. Madeira (the Portuguese word for wood) is the name of a group of islands in the Atlantic Ocean, an autonomous region of Portugal and a popular holiday destination. It is also the name of the largest of the islands.

Madeira is geologically located on the African Tectonic Plate, though the archipelago is culturally, economically and politically European. Its total population was estimated in 2021 at 251,060. The capital of Madeira is Funchal, which is located on the main island’s south coast.
