S. Chandrasekhar was born in Lahore, India (now Pakistan) and received his B.A. at the University of Madras. At the University of Cambridge he earned his Ph.D. under noted physicist R.H. Fowler and developed the theory of white dwarf stars, showing that quantum mechanical degeneracy pressure cannot stabilize a massive star.

Chandrasekhar, better known as Chandra, was born on October 19, 1910, in Lahore, India (now part of Pakistan), the first son of C. Subrahmanyan Ayyar and Sitalakshmi nee (Divan Bahadur) Balakrishnan. Chandra came from a large family: he had two older sisters, four younger sisters, and three younger brothers.
